Great find love the old military relic’s.

Reasonably common. I have a few of them plus two complete belts - Boer War and WWI era. I use one of the belts to hold my strides up now and again.

Snakes and ladders sometimes up every now and again sometimes down…if you get lucky

Im not unconvinced it’s a duck but read somewhere that they used a duck/swan/snake looking ambiguous face to add another layer of ‘good and evil’ duality to the whole thing. I think the NZers just went with two snakes.

The description of the belt on Trademe is totally incorrect. It is NOT boer War. It is more or less the last of the snake belts - it is a Belt, Cadet. Imported from Great Britain Circa 1912 and then later manufactured locally.

The Boer War ones would be Belt, Leather 1882 Pattern with Snake buckle, imported from Britain and later manufactured in NZ.

There were some discrepancies in the leather ones but to the best of my knowledge ZTypes I and 2 were both Pattern 1882

They were used from the volunteer period through until the 1930s.
