First proper meet up with Steptoe and son (junior) an enjoyable time in the Dunedin bush both wielding F4’s. I had a bit of trouble locking onto anything substantial but saved the hunt right at the end with the 925 earring.

Again Steptoe and son (junior) and I ganged up on the Dunedin bush, for what turned out to be a very enjoyable evening hunt.
Never been to this spot before driven past it hundreds and hundreds of times guessing it would be hunted out.
We both found a Union Steam Ship Company button each… cool

Some of the photos look a bit like Outram Glen. When I got my Garrett Deepseeker aobut 1981 I went there KNOWING I was going to make a mint a minute and find treasures beyond compare but it was a total washout - Hmmm was that a pun?
I did find a fortune at Whare Flat and would have been the first person to do it over - a gold ring, dozens of silver coins and so on.
Now days I restrict myself to detecting gold - that can be fun - well detecting anything is fun when your actually detecting something…worth while that is.
Whare Flat was third best place I have been - the two best were Waimate gold course and the old A & P Showground at Timaru.
Good spotting…never had a lot of luck at the Glen though…way too much junk from all the hoons!
Yes it’s nice to find virgin ground, but it’s getting harder to discover. But the good news is it still out there.
I found the biggest junk pile was Woodside Glen - never found much there. I was also probably first to do Evansdale Glen also about 1981 through to 1984. It was a good spot back then and I clearly remember finding a nice nest of two shilling pieces all silver.
I have always wanted to have a look around whare flat but don’t no where to start. im sure there will be more stuff there! might be worth a look one day iggy!
I have been there recently and dont seem to be able to find anything outside of the scout camp and the best stuff I found back in the early 1980s were outside the scout camp - back then the grass along the creek was nicely mowen
Hmmm I think I might know so am inspired to go for one last look - at the spot they had some of those picnics I got a gold ring and one of the nicest half crowns I have found
Bugger I missed that - I wonder what year it was. Groats are hard to come by in New Zealand - now me is Jellyarse. nothign is every hunted out - you are right - but put it this way, some places dont excite me any more.
Yeh I was super $)::/,) off, I wasted all my time down on the flats and got pretty much zilch. It was a couple years back now, and yes a rare find in NZ a bit like the Farthing… both of which are still on my bucket list
