Hi All

Im about to buy a wetsuit for sniping and a bit of dredging. What thickness are people using, and open or closed cell? Was thinking 5mm 2 piece with hood and probably open cell.

7mm 2piece with inbuilt hood is robust and keeps you warmer than the 5mm.. open cell wettie brand their commercial suit is the goods.. however they have brought out a new range that still uses the stretchy neoprene but has a fleece on the inside so do not need to lube up first which is a game changer

I run a 7 mm open cell:

Re-enforced knees are a bonus. Sometimes I think I could drop down to a 5 mm in summer when in shallow creeks, but most often 7 mm seems like a good option in bigger colder rivers.

Google is your friend, as is you tube to see what snipers & dredgers are into. You will also need plenty of lead weights to hold you down. Two pieces aren’t very convenient when you need to go for a piss. You don’t want to piss in it. There are lots of choices. I had a two piece & while it was good it shrunk on me :laughing: & was a pain when wanting a piss. I have now got a Legacy 8mm one piece with built in hood, a two way zip that goes from low down from your groin & goes diagonally up & across to above the shoulder for ease of getting on & off. You can open the zip from the bottom to flop the old fella out & you are good to go. You will need knee pads, even though the knees mostly do have added padding but they soon get munted up when snipping as you are almost always on your knees. A good light weight & free option for knee pads is to cut & form them from an old car tire inner tube. Or just get store bought ones. Once in the drink they arent so cumbersome.

I don’t worry about a weight belt for sniping myself… just take a mate to step on your back to hold you under :stuck_out_tongue:

Or hold on to a rock. Weight belt depends on the depth.

My mate who’s a commercial diver swears by the Moray two piece open cell, with a scupper fitted so you can take a leak whenever wherever

3mm with long johns top and bottom in summer, heaps more movement take long johns off if in sun but in shade ya need em the air pocket forms between suit and johns equivalent to 9mm they recon I use em right into winter like that but its the movement ya really appreciate try it peops
