Searching for claim to pan

Trod similar path as kids I brought my first motorbike brand new with possum skin money in 1978. The last pussuming I did was 1984. The shine had gone off it when the average price was $5-6 a skin and I was making much more gold dredging.

Working for myself chasing possums and gold for close on 50 years now has been a life, a lot of the time I wonder what I was doing this for there were some hard times. But look back I would not change a single thing, the hard times crazily are probably now my best memories.

I have not chased possums since 84 for many years I hardly saw one dead or alive on the roads. I think 1080 was keeping them under control. I’m now seeing them all the time again and what you have said confirms what I have been thinking some of them have got smart and are not taking the 1080 baits now. I hate 1080 sometime in the future I’m sure the experts will finally realise what an environmental disaster it has been dropping all over our back country.

I went back up a couple of creeks recently for the first time in 5 years never seen bird life like it there was nothing there 5 years ago not a single fan tail but now its swimming in birds always thought the problem is the rats but the 1080 nails everything

Man ya go in a forest 5 days after 1080 drop first day 1 or more little possums, nex day traps full o big buggers, any new food big ones won’t touch until they see little ones alive after eating it. Cause they all hungry by then, they that smart blown my mind last few yrs. Only 1 animal smarter than a possum a whitebait lol I reverse the saying in whitebait season :eyes:

Doc never listen, met a old fella run data trap lines for doc 25yr. He recons he still got job cause every 3 possum he gets is 1 on paper, he recons his tally make em look better so he still around, most either honest or cheats ie claiming more so they personally look good to doc, dont last long as doc cant use there numbers.

Hey Danny,

Just joined and after a place to sluice and pan, notice your metion of some claims with the condition of no motorized equipment. Just wanted to ask if its still ok to access these claims?

Thanks in advance!

Mr T

Hi Danny, new member but have been reading posts here for a while. Hoping to get your permission to prospect on 60299 or 53394 with pan and sluice.

Thanks, Robbo

Go for it Robo but no motorized equipment that includes battery powered. Appreciate it if you let me know if you see anyone else working with motorised equipment on those permits.

Hi Danny,
Think its great youre allowing amateurs a crack. I am another one new to catching gold fever and hoping to get your permission for some fossicking with pan and small sluice on your upper Clutha river claims mentioned.
Can keep an eye out for you if so.
Cheers
Ethan

What’s wrong with all you ā€œnewā€ people just going to the public recreational areas set aside for anybody that needs no permissions? Do you think Danny’s claim has the secret source for you to make a fortune? He will end up with a full time job approving all these requests. :slightly_smiling_face:

At least they ask. Why do you care? it’s his claim.

There are two DOC public fossicking claim areas on the Aorere already. So I just wonder what is going to be so much more special about Danny Walkers part of the Aorere than the two public areas. The gold is all coming down the same river from the same sources. So tararua70, why do you think these people want to go on his claim rather than the public areas? I was just basically asking what was wrong with the public areas, that’s all, which you didn’t answer. So keep your pants on.

Again, it’s none of your business. Why do you feel the need to horn in? I’m sure they have their reasons.

Didn’t mean to ruffle any feathers. Reason for myself asking was just that the clutha claims were a shorter drive from home for a day trip

Good on you man. Asking permission is the way to go.

Processing: 20250622_131322.jpg… pretty low river today and got to get right into a crack

Whats wrong with you ? I’ve been on here a while
now but don’t often comment i just read the info & good stuff avaliable (guess that makes me ā€œnewā€) & in that time I’ve noticed
you’re that guy that comments on almost every post & often makes new comers feel uncomfortable with your overly aggressive approach & to you’re credit this is among some great posts. I’ve been to most of the fossicking areas multiple times & saw the kind offer from Danny & thought why not ask permission for a future mission ?

Just wondering what is wrong with the two public areas as opposed to Danny’s ground on the same river. That is all tararua. I am not making it any of my business. I am all in favour of people asking permission to go on a private claim instead of just going there. That’s a given as I am involved in two claims. I don’t know what it is that you are not understanding what I am saying/asking & attacking me. Have you ever been to the Aorere?
But then again, Danny has claims all over the place & possibly some of these people asking permission there are no public areas close to them.
