Hi my wife and myself both over 60 would like to try the moonlight creek on the west coast .
Whats the road to the camp like ie can I get my 2 wheel drive ute and caravan in
I havnt been there in years, but I would imagine it a bad Idea to try to get a caravan up to Andersons flat. Maybe you could park up in Garden Gully area… Im sure someone will confirm track condition for you though. Good luck, beautiful place!
The track in is not suitable for towing a caravan, idealy you need a 4wd and tent to stay at the road end. Perhaps camp at Nelson Creek DOC campsite and do a day trip in your ute to check it out.
The road in was fine in the new year and all I had was a 2wd van. Probably a different story after rain. Was pretty busy in there. Was even a bus at Andersons flat.
Have had a Corolla right to the end of the track before, so a 2wd ute will be easy if the tracks in good nick
The road changes radically with weather conditions. Really just a mater of dropping your caravan off lower down & checking the track through to Andersons Flat for yourself. Then you will have a better idea. No point in winging it & getting into a situation where you can’t reverse out or even turn around. I have always gone up there in 4WD’s so that was no problem. There could be tree fall across the track so unless you have a chain saw that can stuff it for you.
I have a mate who is going up there either today or tomorrow & he is in a 2WD Toyota Hilux van. He phoned me from up Waiuta this morning.
If you can’t get up to Moonlight there are many other places you can go to.

I was last up there 2 years ago in my high top Transit camper. Checked the road out beforehand and rode in by ebike. There’s one spot with a short steep bit of loose gravel…had to get the shovel out for a bit of road work . Otherwise no problem. I’m heading that way in a week or two so will repeat the bike ride. Hopefully there aint a crowd in there! Good hunting.JR
Hi there , can anyone give me an update on the access road into Moonlight? Hope to head there after visiting Nelson Creek in a couple of days. Any current info on either spot appreciated…was at moonlight a couple of years back. Never at Nelson creek.
Anyone in the area wanting to buddy up for a day on the river , feel free to pm me. Have a sluice and gm 1000 . Neither had much use less seen any gold. Cheers.JR
