How to create a map of the claim for application

Hey Permit experts,
I just created an account with NZPAM and try to create an application… This needs a map with coordinates in specific formats of the area of the permit…
I was now wondering how I can actually create that… Like, is there some (online) tool for that?
I can’t just draw some area onto LINZ Images as that doesn’t give me the actual land area, which is a mandatory requirement for the application…
Thanks
Pax

QGIS is great for that sort of thing, it’s a free program, and there are plenty of helpful tutorials on YouTube

Something new to learn… Tomorrow…

I also used QGIS myself, then pulled in various layers to help with the process e.g. LINZ topo50 / LINZ aerial imagery layers to toggle between, river centerlines which I then selected an area an added a number of meters buffer to so I overlapped the whole river and gave a margin for error for what I wanted to claim. But you can just do a freehand draw of area you want to claim to keep it simple.

Then you’ll need to export the selected area as an ArcGIS Shapefile to submit with your application.

Took me quite a while playing to figure things out and get what I needed. I’d love to provide more detail but the memory has faded as it was a fair few years back now.

Thanks

Currently playing with QGIS… Managed to load the neighbouring Claims so I don’t try to claim over them and some LINZ aerial images via API…
I’m just struggling at the moment to get some useful Topographic map into QGIS, like the Topographic layer from the LINZ Basemap… That seems to be quite a nice map to actually see the river among the trees…

If you can get the aerial imagery in then there should be a topo50 layer you can pull in from same source in same way

Found a World Relief layer that has amazing relief details and that worked like a charm to get the stream areas mapped out

Would anybody be interested if I’d write a guide for how to create the mapping things for a claim application using QGIS and publicly available maps?

Definitely…its another language to me.even though be while before i would use but i would happily store it.

Yes, very interested. Am hoping that you have the knowledge as I have absolutely no idea. Cheers
