Yeah. The maori found it worthless. They had no use for it.
Until they realised them white fellers valued it, & then they cottoned on to it. It was a Maori, Jack Tewa Known as Maori Jack who knew there was gold in the Arrow & told MacGregor & his mate Thomas Low who started working it before William Fox came along. Despite the history books bestowing the find to Fox.
Bit of a fun fact, The up market subdivision of Jacks Point in Queenstown is named after Jack Tewa.

I have read but cant find it again.
One of the first boats built in NZ was at Riverton to take French settlers back to Tahiti from Akaroa, they were not so keen on NZ. When they got there they the crew found out about the gold discoveries in California and sailed on to America. When the Maori crew found out what all the fuss was about they said we have this in NZ why did we come all this way? Cant remember what happened after that.
