Gold from Quartz

Hey everyone,

wondering if there’s anyone with any experience in getting gold from quartz. I found a gold bearing quartz vein in an old mine shaft and have gathered a significant amount of quartz from it. I don’t have a rock crusher so have gathered the material to make a dolly pot, wondering if anyone has any advice on the best way to crush and test the rock with minimal gear.

I ave roasted the quartz to make it brittle and easier to crush, but youtube indicates panning is the only way as the gold might be too fine for a sluice to pick up? any suggestions would be helpful! I have found very small flecks of gold from panning a little bit of the crushed quartz but obviously without the gear to crush it properly I was only panning a few teaspoons of stuff.

Based Nelson region. Also if anyone local has a proper rock crusher that might do a better job than a dolly pot, that would be legendary!

How ever you do it, make sure you wear mask and know about the danger’s of crushing quarts and the quartz shards/dust. Not good, but done correctly/safely should be fine. Be interesting to see what you get out of it.:+1:

Thanks @Gold_Standard, I was blissfully unaware of the risks myself so thanks for putting them on my radar.

No worries Gav, I was in the same boat and got a bit of a fright when I discovered how dangerous the stuff is. Thought I should share. Appreciate that😊Cheers mate👍

Ive seen a few people crush it in a cement mixer with ball bearings in it,bit like a low key ball mill

If you go on you tube there are lots of How To Make A Rock Crusher powered by a battery or 240 volt hand grinder. The battery powered unit would be great for sampling out in the field. Not a production unit but good for testing.

Here is an example. There are better ones with a feed in chute, but you will get the idea.
