Fellow coromandel gold hunters

After spending time deep in the bush sluicing on the West coast, I have now headed back up to the north island and back to the Coromandel, where alluvial gold is infamously harder to find. I have had some luck around the K gorge and Maramoto areas, however I have some new spots to investigate in the coming weeks. And was looking to connect with Fellow Coromandel prospectors keen an an adventure.

How did you get on in the West coast?

No public fossicking areas in the north island. Forbidden activity. You will always be looking over your shoulder for the frog arse licking & tree hugging greenie hypocrites. Be stealth.

Yeah good mate, always a good time down there

Yeah the hundreds of ā€˜no mining’ signs all over the place are a bit intimidating… I have read past threads where you mentioned your run-ins with the greenies. i’ll keep a low profile… Thanks JW

I do a ton of exploring around the classic mining areas and some machete-worthy deep bush prowling, usually hunting lost mines, but always keen to catch up and do some missions with some others. Always make sure I pan off the beaten path. Sometimes hours off the beaten path

I have a 7 year old who has really gotten into gold mining along with collecting every gem and cool rock she finds, we brought her some pay dirt bags for her birthday to do at home but its not ā€œreal gold miningā€. we can’t get down south and we would deal with the cost and make the effort if we knew she was willing to do the hard work but at well over 1k in gas, food and ferry fees its not feasible for us.

I want to take her out for a day in the next school holidays which are two weeks from now, we have family in waihi and corromandel isn’t too far away from us, is there anyone that could offer a safe-ish place to go have a bit of fun? or some info to get me on the right track? have had a look at Broken Hills Campground on maps after reading other posts on here and I am unsure on how safe it would be with all of the roads along the river.

Not in it for the gold, Just the smile on her face if we are lucky enough to find a spec and a great day being outdoors with the kids

Keep in mind there are no legal gold fossicking areas in the north island. As I have stated above in this thread already. It is a forbidden activity. More so in the Coromandel with all the greenies & frog arse licking, tree hugging type ready to give you grief & or dobbing you into environment Waikato. Like what happened to me. Not trying to be a party pooper but just making you totally aware. In this case ignorance is not bliss. Do it at your own peril. To me Environment Waikato threatened legal action. Giving me two weeks until the meeting time & for me to have a lawyer present. That put the hebe jebies up me that is for sure. In the last hour they let me off but made me very aware that was my one & only final warning. Admittedly I was dredging & getting some nice gold. Well nice for the Coromandel.

You are probably better off just looking for semi precious gem stones, but use a gold pan. Wink wink, nudge nudge. If you get my drift. Good luck.

I’m definitely taking your multiple warnings to heart, I have been searching google maps for somewhere somewhat easy to access but still off the beaten path, all the info you have put on here has been a great head start on some great sight seeing locations

Was rock hunting over 20 years ago with my daughters when they were at primary school in the coromandel area. Wasn’t into gold so much then but did find some specimen carnelian. Was just as good to them then. You bought back some good memories

Enjoy the fossicking Brendon

Hey Tom, super keen on this kinda stuff, We’ve also done a bit of bush bashing out the back of Maramoto, Karangahape, Broken Hills and Thames. Its insane whats out the back of those hills. keen to jump on some missions

Hey Rebel, Absolutely keep a low profile (as is always emphasised whenever people mention the Coromandel). For that reason I agree I wouldn’t head up into the Broken hills. It could be worth heading up the Maramoto valley. pretty secluded up there and it isn’t a long walk to find a hidden part of the river.

Don’t you mean Maratoto??

Yeah thats the one… Thanks JW

cheers for that! will definitely check it out online
