Anyone heading up moonlight creek, weekend 30th March? of the

Hi everyone,

I’m planning a trip to Moonlight Creek on the weekend of the 30th for a birthday get away and was wondering if anyone with experience in the area might be heading up there and could offer some tips? I’ve been fossicking several times and have all the necessary gear, but I still struggle to find anything substantial—just a few flakes so far.

Does anyone have any specific advice for fossicking at Moonlight Creek? I’ll be using a Dream Mat for the first time on this trip.

You have to find a spot where all the theories of flow (ie where it slows) drops the heavies and usually dig till you hit bedrock. Sometimes at moonlight you have to shift big rocks. BUT moonlight can be very rewarding. AND sometimes very disappointing. Just have to try

and be aware that the road in isnt always in tip top condition. at least it hasnt been on the couple of trips i have had there

Take an excavator. :smile: No gold is easy gold. More so these days. A mate of mine was up Moonlight a month ago. Got up there in a Hiace van no problems. He hadn’t been there before but was blown away by the amount of smashed up bedrock (been like that for years really). He didn’t do any good. He was detecting mostly & he considered he went to places that were challenging, thinking no one would have been there before him. I had to break it to him that no matter where you go you can absolutely guarantee many have been there before you. Didn’t help that he had a crap detector. which I told him years ago was crap. The fact he did find a couple of bits with it years ago gave him false hope that it was still the bee’s knees today.

He did try a bit of sniping & panning but my guess is that he didn’t really have the right gear in all honesty.

He left my place owning a Gold Monster which is streets ahead of what he had. He also left with a bit of panned gold from the Arrow & the Shotover.

My advice up Moonlight would be to pick a “likely” spot & just stick to it. Like has been said, get to bedrock. My mate kept hoping from spot to spot when the gold didn’t flow in.
