Someone contacted me with this find of a possible alluvial silver nugget found in a Canterbury east coast river:

He’s going to get it checked with a jeweler to see if it’s really silver.

Oh yer. Might have been best to confirm first. Don’t suppose he told you which river?

She did indeed tell me which river, but I promised to keep it secret unless he’s happy for me to make it public.

Update:

Just walking the river, I collect agetes etc , it has had the scratch test with the solution and it was silver

WOW, that’s cool & a stonker of a native silver nugget if that is the case. How did he/she, you don’t seem sure,:grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: come across it? Surely it wasn’t just sitting there. So the two possible rivers I reckon are either the Wilberforce or the Rakaia due to gold bearing reefs in the headwaters of the Wilberforce which flows into the Rakaia. Mums the word if you confirm. I certainly won’t be going to have a look. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: :cowboy_hat_face:

Thats awesome!! Wish I knew more about silver in NZ, I prefer silver to gold personally… except the price i suppose haha.

If anyone has any resources to point me at for more info on silver in NZ, I would appreciate it greatly :blush: I have done preliminary searching for info but always easier if someone has refined the process and more directed leads.

I got something very similar half size of that just below the old dam a couple km up from concrete river crossing in sth cant was hers silver ?? Ole jw you just keep out of my potts rakaia feeder up there lol

You’re pretty safe Highwayman. I am currently at New Haven, Owaka, Catlins Coast area. Canterbury a bit far outside my derestriction. :joy:

What ya only over the hill from me then maybe 5 valleys down if ya walk to where ya can look over them hills thems the spots. Bit dark and cold up them gullys though half hr of sun a day aint much fun at least water seems warmer this winter than last. Well before that fresh snow dump it was.
