Gold - Some interesting samples of gold and other minerals I own - found or given

Another piece of gold. Maybe proof that it does not pay to sieve a shovel of dirt into a bucket before panning it!

Found in the creek about 500 yards from my house.

You’re lucky to have a house so close to gold!

Another reason not to use a sieve when gold panning.
One of many such pieces l found back in the day.

Pretty sure you would see that sitting in the sieve before discarding the contents. :slightly_smiling_face:

I wouldnt be prepared to find out after all it depends how much larger gravel which does not go through the sieve that you are dealing with - as I said I never used a sieve and if you dont then you dont take that chance. I do of course removed larger rocks by hand from the pan itself.

U could just detect ur tailings which would allow u to speed up ur processing by sieving the gravels and putting ur mind at rest none of those lumps will be missed anyway its like u always say no gold on ur place

That almost makes it a waste of time sieving if your then going to have a detector there and run it over the tailings.
To me its less effort putting the lot in the pan then just throwning the rocks out by hand.
For forty years l dont believe l saw anyone use a sieve. I had thought of using one back in the late 1970s or early 1980s and got the sieve (an old builders one) but found it a waste of time so hung it in the shed where it still is.
Sieving seems to be a relatively modern idea. For those who want to do it l guess its a great idea. I find it far faster not to.
Also back then we didnt use detectors! I did have a detector though in 1981. I still have it, a Garrett Deepseeker as well as a Whites 6000 the latter one still next to new.
I had large holes in the top of the hopper of my cradle once and had a nugget that would not go through the holes. It was only good luck and providence that l saw it. From then on l always wondered if l missed and lost any more.

Needs a hammer for scale. Only half kidding - if I have the sense of scale right, it’s probably too thick a vein to be very interesting. But as someone else has already said - follow it through the terrain and see if it gets more interesting further along. Good exercise in field geology if nothing else.

Another nugget from a spot l have access to.
A good friend of mine agrees with our resident ex-pert that there is no gold there as he has only found fly specs to date. In fact if I didnt know him better I would call him ‘The Flyspec Kid.’

The last nugget l will put up due largely to lack of interest but the last of many such specimen nuggets, all taken from our claim at one time or the other.

Not the biggest.
