What happens to public fossicking areas once the expire?
They’ll probably just keep getting renewed. But if they did expire I imagine it’ll be the same as any other claim - anyone can put a claim on the area for themselves.

@harry.kiwibloke Because I noticed that some of these were about to expire last month, I rang NZP&M and asked the question, they advised me they will all be renewed. Good News for us !!!

does that mean they will be closed for months until the paper war is done to renew them.

I noticed a few months ago Lyell and a fossicking claim on the coast north of west port was about to expire
Lyell creek granted 1996. expires 2026 according to nzpam site.
I understood from NZP&M these public sites are renewed automatically
